The Race Course Project: Report 5

RACE COURSE CEMETERY FENCING PROJECT

APPEAL LAUNCHED ON SUNDAY, 20 MAY 2012 at Church of The Holy Trinity, Kissy Road, Freetown.

By Sierra Leone Bicentenary Trust, Registered Charity No: 700447 England

In partnership with TUMAC Sierra Leone

Supported by Freetown City Council.

31 December, 2012 – Fifth Report

Hi All:

To God be the Glory!!

Fantastic news!  We have now raised Le47,073,000 and spent Le46,592,750.  I am pleased to say that the work is well under way and so I say a very big thank you to all who have subscribed to this unique project.  On another positive note, considering that the image of the youth at Race Course who call themselves “Friends of the Dead” (FOD) was really bad, engaging them, involving and bringing ordinary people together in the community was one of the hopes for this project.  Some FOD volunteered and helped to clean the cemetery.  This has restored some RESPECT for the final resting place of our loved ones.  There is every hope that the reputation of FOD Race Course will be enhanced.  There is still work to be done with FOD youths at other cemeteries.

Sadly, security has been a challenge.  It is not possible to always watch over the building materials and tools effectively at the site.  Losing items daily is a strain on resources.  A major concern also is the safety of sections of the fence.  Congestion at Race Course Road by Street Traders and large trailer vehicles in particular to and from the quay that constantly results in traffic jams.  In the process of navigating their way out, it has now become a regular occurrence for vehicles to crash into the newly built walls.  This is increasing the cost of constructing the fence and hampering our progress seriously.  Freetown City Council and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority and the Police have been asked to take appropriate action in this regard.

As you can see below, the photographs show steady progress being achieved.  TUMAC has now constructed fifty six (56) panels and twenty three (23) pillars to date.  The next phase will require an estimated Le100,000,000 to construct the fence panels and posts.  Particular thanks to Dr. Mohamed T. Macarthy, CEO, TUMAC Group of Companies, Sierra Leone.  A true philanthropist and real Friend of the Dead, he has delivered on his promise to help make this project happen in these frugal times.  I am made to understand that Dr. Macarthy has expended an additional Le45,000,000 on the project.

It says a lot about a society how they care for their dead.  We understand that we are living in stringent financial times.  However, your financial support of £20, $20 or more will go a long way in completing the fencing of the Race Course Cemetery.  Please help this worthy project to care for the final resting place of our loved ones.  Thanks also to “Chairman” of FOD Race Course, Alhaji S. Jalloh who has identified and compiled the attached list of some of the prominent Sierra Leoneans buried at the Race Course Cemetery.

All funds are accounted for in a bi-monthly statement of expenditure on the project.

We are looking forward to your continued prayers and support.

Ronald Andrew Lisk-Carew, Chair, Sierra Leone Bicentenary Trust, Registered Charity No:700447, England.

We hope to produce detailed accounts like the one below, on a regular basis, as we progress.
