The Race Course Project: Report 6

RACE COURSE CEMETERY FENCING PROJECT

APPEAL LAUNCHED ON SUNDAY, 20 MAY 2012 at Church of The Holy Trinity, Kissy Road, Freetown.

By Sierra Leone Bicentenary Trust, Registered Charity No: 700447 England

In partnership with TUMAC Sierra Leone

And consultation with Freetown City Council.

28 February, 2013 – Sixth Report

Hi All:

To God be the Glory!!

It is noteworthy and inspiring to report that The Sierra Leone Police, Harbour Division, took some action in ensuring that the chaotic scenario that use to exist at Race Course Road has been partly eliminated with “STOP POLICE” barriers, albeit that official steps to make the one way flow of traffic permanent is yet to be taken by the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA).  A special thank you to LUC Jibolloh, J.A. and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alphonso A. Fambulleh, Operations Officer, Ross Road, Freetown East especially for quickly responding to my letter requesting their help to address the traffic problem and illegal structures hampering our progress.

The flip side concerns Freetown City Council who promised all the support necessary at the inception of the project.  To date, no support has been forthcoming, instead, it has now become purely a consultative relationship.  The use of the cemetery area as a dump for waste from old vehicles in particular being broken up and other garbage is relentless and severe.  Furthermore, instead of removing the rubbish, it is set on fire on site, which, apart from everything else, badly affects and/or destroys graves.  Extraordinarily, the City Council does nothing about this outrage.

The photographs attached show the progress to date despite the odds.

It says a lot about a society how they care for their dead.  We understand that we are living in stringent financial times.  However, your financial support of £20, $20 or more will go a long way in completing the fencing of the Race Course Cemetery.  Please help this worthy project to care for the final resting place of our loved ones.

Thanks to “Chairman” of Friends of the Dead (FOD) Race Course, Alhaji S. Jalloh who has identified and compiled the attached list of some of the prominent Sierra Leoneans buried at the Race Course Cemetery.

All funds are accounted for in a bi-monthly statement of expenditure on the project.

We are looking forward to your continued prayers and support.

Ronald Andrew Lisk-Carew, Chair, Sierra Leone Bicentenary Trust, Registered Charity No:700447, England.

We hope to produce detailed accounts like the one below, on a regular basis, as we progress.
